This photograph shows one of the three tailing ponds in Jaduguda and the pipeline that carries the uranium waste. In 2006 and 2015, the pipeline carrying waste from the tailing ponds developed cracks. This caused further contamination to the groundwater in Jaduguda, said Ghanshyam Biruli, the founder of the Jharkhandi Organization against Radiation (JOAR). JOAR has been running a movement since 1998, demanding safer practices by the Uranium Corporation of India Ltd (UCIL), which operates the Jaduguda mines.
