Canals carrying waste water from the tanneries cut through the agricultural fields in Kanpur. The water is highly contaminated with chromium and other harmful chemicals but is used for farming. As a result, the ground water too has become polluted, the agricultural fields have become less productive. Scientific research shows crops grown here also have chromium content which is carcinogenic. Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India. Arindam Mukherjee.
